A Tragedy Strikes Southern Spain

Southern Europe is on high alert due to an intense heatwave that has triggered an unprecedented tragedy in the province of Almería, Andalusia. A wildfire has claimed the lives of at least 12 people, left 23 others missing, and ravaged more than 3,200 hectares of land.

What We Know So Far

  • Date and Origin: The fire started on July 9, 2026, around 18:00 local time, apparently caused by a fallen power line over dry brush on the outskirts of Los Gallardos.
  • Extreme Conditions: Winds of up to 50 km/h and temperatures nearing 40°C allowed the fire to travel 12 kilometers in just 20 minutes.
  • Victims: 4 British victims were found in a vehicle (right-hand drive) and 7 others in the town of Bédar. Many bodies require DNA identification.
  • Evacuees: Around 1,000 residents have been evacuated, including tourist areas like Mojácar.

The Impact of Climate Change

According to BBC News Mundo, climate change is intensifying heatwaves in Europe, a continent that is warming twice as fast as the global average. Experts warn that episodes like this will become increasingly frequent. This wildfire is already considered the deadliest in Andalusia in recent decades, surpassing historical tragedies like the one in Grazalema in 1992.

The regional president of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, addressed the tragedy with a heavy heart, warning that the death toll could rise. From Imago, we send a message of hope and solidarity to all the affected families and the rescue teams working tirelessly in the area.
