Southern Europe is on high alert due to an intense heatwave that has triggered an unprecedented tragedy in the province of Almería, Andalusia. A wildfire has claimed the lives of at least 12 people, left 23 others missing, and ravaged more than 3,200 hectares of land.
According to BBC News Mundo, climate change is intensifying heatwaves in Europe, a continent that is warming twice as fast as the global average. Experts warn that episodes like this will become increasingly frequent. This wildfire is already considered the deadliest in Andalusia in recent decades, surpassing historical tragedies like the one in Grazalema in 1992.
Spain's Military Emergency Unit (UME) has joined local firefighter brigades with 64 members, 12 fire engines, and 11 aerial assets. Additionally, 4 people remain hospitalized with severe burns, and 4 others have minor injuries.
