The historic qualification of Argentina to the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup after defeating Switzerland 3-1 in extra time on July 11, 2026, filled the streets of the country with joy. However, the intensity of the match also brought moments of tension and pain, reminding everyone of the importance of celebrating responsibly.
According to the Emergency Medical Attention System (SAME, by its Spanish acronym), a 51-year-old man died of a heart attack at 11:44 PM at the intersection of Paysandú and Gaona Avenue in Buenos Aires City. Despite resuscitation efforts by emergency teams, his death was confirmed at the scene.
The official report detailed that between 10:41 PM and 1:27 AM, SAME intervened in six other coronary emergencies in different parts of Buenos Aires:

The euphoria following the victory also resulted in at least 13 injured people in the early hours of Sunday. Among the most serious episodes, a man was attacked at 9 de Julio and Belgrano Avenues past 2:00 AM. He was hit with a hammer and transferred to Argerich Hospital for a traumatic brain injury.
Other incidents included the intoxication of a 26-year-old youth at Plaza Seeber, and eye wounds from pellets and glass in different central areas. Three police officers also suffered abrasions during the control operation.
In the province of Córdoba, about 20,000 people gathered near the Patio Olmos shopping mall. The operation, coordinated by the Córdoba Police and the Municipality, lasted until 5:00 AM.
According to police sources, the celebration was mostly peaceful. Only 6 people were detained for misdemeanors, and alcoholic beverages and structures installed in public spaces were confiscated, restoring order without serious confrontations.
