The Republican Senator from South Carolina, Lindsey Graham, passed away on Saturday night, July 11, 2026, at the age of 71, following a "brief and sudden illness", according to a brief statement released by his office on social media. The family of the legislator, a former Air Force lawyer, thanked the public for their prayers and requested privacy during this difficult time.
Graham was one of the most influential figures in Washington regarding foreign policy. He had just returned from Kyiv, where he met on Friday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. During this visit, he announced an agreement with the Trump administration to advance a sanctions package against Russia.
President Donald Trump mourned his death on social media, calling him "one of the best people and senators I have ever known" and a "true American patriot". For his part, Senate Majority Leader John Thune highlighted that Graham was "a staunch defender of the United States and a strong ally of freedom-loving countries around the world".
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu paid tribute to Graham, describing him as "a great friend of Israel". Zelensky also expressed his sorrow, recalling that the senator visited Ukraine 10 times since the Russian invasion.
First elected to the Senate in 2002, Graham was seeking a fifth term in the November 2026 midterm elections. His passing occurs against the backdrop of a narrow Republican majority in the chamber, where the party holds 53 seats compared to the Democrats' 47.
Under South Carolina law, Republican Governor Henry McMaster must appoint a temporary replacement to fill Graham's seat. Following this appointment, a special primary is required for voters to select a new candidate within a matter of weeks. The winner of the general election will assume office in January, beginning a full six-year term.
Graham was unmarried and had no children. His closest living relative is his sister, Darline Graham Nordone, whom he helped raise after the tragic death of their parents.
