According to a report by Infobae citing the specialized portal WABetaInfo, WhatsApp would be developing a highly anticipated feature for forgetful users: a notification system for your contacts' birthdays.
The idea is to integrate a social reminder directly into the communication channel most used for congratulations. According to leaked details, the app would include a special section where users can see a list of upcoming birthdays. Additionally, automatic notifications would be sent on the exact day of each contact's birthday.
For this feature to work, the contact must have provided their date of birth in the application. If the data is not loaded, WhatsApp will not be able to generate the reminder.
The request for date of birth began in a previous beta version (2.24.12.25) in response to United States regulations requiring age verification for users. Initially, this data was not visible to other contacts.
With the 2.26.27.3 beta for Android, WhatsApp started designing a section that transforms this information into a useful tool, similar to the reminders offered by Facebook, encouraging personal interaction.
Although the news is exciting for staying closer to our loved ones, there are still aspects to be defined. In this early stage of development, WhatsApp has not implemented specific privacy controls for this feature. Currently, there would be no option to decide whether your birthday is shared with other contacts or kept private.
Date of birth is sensitive personal data, so the company will face the challenge of balancing the usefulness of these reminders with the protection of its users' information.
The birthday notification feature is currently in the development phase for Android devices. Not even beta testers can try it yet, and there is no official release date announced.
This advancement confirms a positive trend: WhatsApp is expanding its offerings beyond traditional chatting, moving closer to dynamics that facilitate personal communication. The main goal is to keep congratulations within the same platform, making our daily digital lives simpler and more enjoyable.
