Ongoing Deaths at Del Monte Farm in Kenya: Families Demand Justice

14/07/2026 15:21 - Internacionales

The Context of the Plantation

The expansive Del Monte pineapple plantation, located in Murang'a County, Kenya, spans approximately 40 square kilometers (about 15 square miles). It stands as the largest exporter of Kenyan agricultural products, generating over $100 million annually. Following serious allegations of violence in 2023, the company took a step to reform its security by hiring the British security firm G4S in March 2024. G4S deployed a team of 270 guards alongside GardaWorld, promising to improve human rights standards.

New Deaths Reported Despite Security Overhaul

Despite the new measures, families and politicians are alarmed by three new deaths over the past year allegedly linked to G4S guards and local police:

  • Stephen Marubu Kibandi (34 years old): Died on August 12, 2025 after being shot in the chest. A witness claimed he raised his hands in a sign of surrender.
  • Haron Kame Kibandi (27 years old): Stephen's brother, died on April 20, 2026 from brain injuries after allegedly being stoned by guards while riding a motorcycle.
  • Michael Muiruri (31 years old): Died on August 8, 2025 after being struck by a G4S pickup truck.

The Search for Justice and Corporate Responses

Murang'a Senator Joe Nyutu expressed profound concern and called for an independent investigation: 'No company operating in Kenya, regardless of its size, should be beyond scrutiny.'

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for G4S stated that their guards receive training in human rights and de-escalation techniques. They denied any wrongdoing, arguing that the incidents were either police operations or traffic accidents currently being investigated by Kenyan authorities.
