Today, July 15, 2026, the football world stops to witness one of the most anticipated semifinals of the 2026 World Cup. Argentina and England clash at 4:00 PM (local Atlanta time) at the impressive Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
The Argentine National Team, led by coach Lionel Scaloni—affectionately known by fans as La Scaloneta—arrives at this crossroads with the hope of achieving their sixth consecutive victory in the tournament. The captain, Lionel Messi, now 39 years old, will experience a historic moment by playing his first match against England at the senior level, having already scored 8 goals in this World Cup and 21 in World Cup history.
FIFA has taken strict measures for this encounter. The entry of flags, shirts, and banners with references to the Falkland Islands (known in Argentina as the Islas Malvinas, a territory over which both nations historically claim sovereignty) has been banned. This is an attempt to keep the focus purely on sports, although the historical context is inevitable for both fanbases.
The security operation will be the largest seen in the tournament, with more than 1,600 security officers deployed at the stadium. To prevent clashes, separate entrances have been established: Argentine fans must enter through Gate 4, while English supporters will use Gate 3.
Additionally, the entry of bottles was prohibited, and it was reported that 13 Argentines were denied entry for attempting to enter with fake tickets. So far, around 33,000 people from Argentina have registered in the U.S. for admission rights.
The historical record between both teams marks 5 matches at the senior level, with a balance favoring the Europeans: 3 wins for England, 1 for Argentina, and 1 draw. However, La Scaloneta has proven to be an unstoppable team and looks to reverse this statistic today.
From the Casa Rosada (the seat of the Argentine executive branch), the government of Javier Milei has ruled out granting an administrative work leave for this day, despite requests from a public employees' union. The president himself will follow the match alongside Karina Milei from the presidential residence in Olivos, a suburb of Buenos Aires.
