The globally popular messaging app WhatsApp is preparing an innovation that will delight millions of users. According to the specialized tracking site WABetaInfo, the platform has begun testing a new feature in its beta version that allows you to know if a contact is online at a glance, without needing to open the conversation.
The main characteristic of this novelty is the incorporation of a green dot that will appear directly on the user's profile photo. This visual indicator will be visible in the chat list, making it instantly easy to know who is available to talk.
One of the biggest concerns when introducing this type of feature is privacy. However, the development team clarified that the green dot will strictly respect the existing privacy settings each user has for their "last seen". That is, if you have your last connection time hidden, your online status will also be hidden from others.
Although the feature is already being tested by beta users, there is no official release date for the massive rollout. It is estimated that this feature will be part of a future dedicated contacts screen arriving on both iOS and Android devices in the coming weeks.
A beta version is a testing stage prior to the official launch of a software. It allows a small group of users (usually testers or enthusiasts) to try out new features to detect bugs and improve the experience before it reaches all devices. If you want to be a tester, you can sign up for the Google Play Beta program or Apple's TestFlight.
