Orange Alert for Buenos Aires: Intense Storms, Hail, and Strong Winds Expected This Friday

31/07/2026 09:20 - Actualidad

A Friday Marked by Weather Instability

The end of the winter break in Argentina arrives with a significant meteorological event. For this Friday, July 31, 2026, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued an orange alert for the Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (AMBA), La Plata, and the northern part of the province, extending to the Atlantic Coast. What does an orange alert mean? According to the SMN, it indicates that dangerous weather phenomena are expected for society, human life, property, and the environment, requiring preparation and caution.

The origin of this storm is due to the interaction of two air masses: warm, humid air entering from the north, simultaneously with the advance of a cold front over the center of the country. This convergence generates a high instability index that will trigger powerful storms.

Key Timings and What to Expect

The storm system will leave accumulated precipitation between 30 and 60 millimeters, with records that could reach 80 millimeters in specific areas where cells persist longer. Two time windows of highest risk have been identified for this Friday:

  • 09:30 to 12:00 local time: First peak of activity with isolated showers.
  • 18:00 to 22:00 local time: Second and more relevant window, with short but very intense storms.

The main risk will come from possible hail of various sizes and gusts that could exceed 70 km/h. Rain probabilities will increase from 10-40% in the morning to 100% by night.

Authorities recommend securing objects that could fly off balconies and terraces, not taking out trash to avoid flooding, and postponing non-urgent errands.

Improvement for the Weekend

Conditions will begin to improve during the early hours or morning of Saturday, August 1. The cold front will move northeast, leaving more stable weather with decreasing cloudiness and temperatures between 13°C and 19°C in Buenos Aires city.

Sunday and Next Week

Sunday is expected to be cool with temperatures between 10 and 15°C and variable cloudiness. Although next week may bring new, less intense atmospheric disturbances, this storm will help clear the air and recharge water reservoirs in the region.
