IMF Chief Georgieva's Optimistic Visit to Argentina: Dinner with Top Business Leaders and Tour of Vaca Muerta

A Historic Visit: Georgieva in Argentina

From July 27 to 28, 2026, Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), made a landmark visit to Argentina. Her agenda included a tour of the Vaca Muerta shale oil and gas field in Neuquén province and a highly exclusive dinner with the country's so-called 'círculo rojo' (red circle) – the most powerful business figures. The visit left a wave of optimism, with Georgieva reportedly stating that Argentina's economic reforms are on the right track and that the country could soon become a net energy exporter and a key global player.

The Private Dinner at Palacio Duhau

On the evening of July 28, 2026, Georgieva attended a closed-door dinner at the Palacio Duhau, a luxury hotel in the Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires. The event was organized by Max Alier Montenegro, head of the IMF's local office, and notably included no government officials from President Javier Milei's administration. Georgieva wanted to hear directly from the private sector without intermediaries.

The dinner menu featured burrata, beef tenderloin with mashed potatoes, and a dulce de leche crème brûlée. The conversation covered the economy, business climate, tax burdens, informality, and lessons from past failures like the convertibility system. As she left at 10:00 PM, Georgieva made a striking remark: 'I am convinced that in the near future, instead of Argentina asking the IMF for money, the IMF will be asking Argentina for a contribution.'

The 10 Business Leaders Invited

The guest list brought together key figures from sectors the IMF considers critical for growth:

  • Eduardo Elsztain (IRSA / Banco Hipotecario)
  • Jorge Brito (Banco Macro / Genneia)
  • Marcos Bulgheroni (Pan American Energy)
  • Juan Martín de la Serna (Mercado Libre)
  • Pierpaolo Barbieri (Ualá)
  • Mariana Schoua (AmCham)
  • Isela Costantini (Grupo ST)
  • Martín Pérez de Solay (Glencore)
  • Daniel Novegil (Ternium)
  • Catalina Cascio (Ferrosider)

Vaca Muerta: The Energy Engine

On the morning of July 28, 2026, Georgieva traveled to Neuquén province accompanied by Economy Minister Luis Caputo, Deputy Minister José Luis Daza, and YPF President Horacio Marín. They visited the Loma Campana field, which accounts for 16% of Argentina's oil production from Vaca Muerta. The tour lasted from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and aimed to showcase the country's energy potential.

According to data from Infobae and Argentina's statistics agency INDEC, the numbers back the optimism. In the first half of 2026, Argentina's energy trade balance posted a surplus of USD 5.076 billion, a 61.7% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Crude oil has overtaken soybean meal as the country's top individual export. Sector projections estimate energy exports could reach USD 28 billion by 2030 and approach USD 42 billion by 2035.

A Promising Future

Georgieva's visit left a very positive impression on the business community. She highlighted Argentina's accumulation of USD 49 billion in central bank reserves, falling inflation, and fiscal discipline. While acknowledging that growth has not yet reached all sectors equally, she emphasized that the direction is correct. The dinner and the Vaca Muerta tour reinforced confidence that Argentina is on track to become a net energy exporter and a key player in the global economy.
