Wall Street Rally Lifts Argentine Stocks: Merval Surges 2.2% and Country Risk Drops

30/07/2026 18:37 - Economia

This July 30, 2026, Argentine markets experienced a much-needed rebound, driven by a solid upturn on Wall Street. According to reports from Infobae and El Cronista, positive corporate earnings in the United States lifted investor sentiment, benefiting Argentine assets.

Tech-Driven Rally in the U.S.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq led gains with a 2.8% rise, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.2% and the S&P 500 climbed 1.7%. The main catalyst was Microsoft’s earnings report, which sent its shares soaring nearly 15.5%, easing concerns about AI investment returns.

The Federal Reserve (Fed) had held its benchmark interest rate at 3.50%–3.75% on July 29, and the U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation reading for June came in at a moderate 3.7% year-over-year, creating a favorable backdrop for emerging markets like Argentina.

Argentina’s S&P Merval Soars

On the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange, the benchmark S&P Merval index surged 2.2% to 3,304,918 points. The advance was led by financial and energy sectors, which showed remarkable vitality.

Argentine companies that trade on Wall Street as American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) posted widespread gains. Notable performers included Central Puerto (up 7.8%), Edenor (+7%), Banco Supervielle (+6.9%), and Transportadora de Gas del Sur (+5.5%).

What Is Country Risk and How Did It Move?

Country risk (known as riesgo país in Argentina) measures the extra premium investors demand to lend to a country. A lower number means better access to international financing. After several days of pressure, Argentina’s country risk fell for the first time in six sessions, settling at 441 basis points — a nearly 1% improvement from the previous day.

Sovereign dollar-denominated bonds (Bonares and Globales) traded mixed with slight variations, but the local market showed resilience amid global geopolitical tensions. Brent crude oil, which had spiked above USD 90 per barrel due to U.S.–Iran tensions, eased about 1.4% to USD 89.43.

Encouraging signs: The Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA) bought USD 117 million in the foreign exchange market, pushing total reserves to a comfortable USD 49.2 billion. The official exchange rate held steady around ARS 1,515 per dollar, while the parallel “blue” dollar traded at ARS 1,565.
