Presidential Spokesman Adrián Ravier confirmed that part of the SisVial funds is being used to balance public accounts and achieve a surplus. The measure aims to stabilize the national economy, with roadworks projected to resume in the future.

Transparency in Fiscal Management

On August 10, 2026, Presidential Spokesman Adrián Ravier admitted that the Argentine government is using a portion of the SisVial (Integrated Road System) funds to achieve fiscal balance. This statement, made during a visit to the province of La Pampa, opens a window of transparency into how the Ministry of Economy, led by Luis Caputo, is managing resources to stabilize public accounts inherited from previous administrations.

Ravier pointed out that while part of the liquid fuel taxes goes to Vialidad (the national highway authority), another portion is allocated by the Ministry of Economy to achieve fiscal balance in a very complex situation. The main goal is to sustain the fiscal surplus and ensure a stable economic horizon for the country, which will eventually allow infrastructure works to resume with greater financial solidity.

What is SisVial?

For those unfamiliar with Argentine infrastructure funding, SisVial is a trust fund that collects a portion of the liquid fuel tax with a specific legal objective: to finance the construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation of the national road network. The Ministry of Economy is its enforcing authority, while Banco Nacion (Argentina's national bank) acts as the trustee operating a special checking account.

According to a report by the local media outlet LA NACION, the government has chosen to prioritize the financial health of the State. From the beginning of Javier Milei's administration until May 2026, the trust fund collected $1,503,252 million ARS (Argentine Pesos). However, only 26.2% ($394,406 million ARS) was executed in roadworks, keeping over $1 billion ARS in financial investments such as fixed-term deposits and public bonds.

Hopeful Numbers for the Future

The government's strategy focuses on healing the economy to build solid foundations. The under-execution of SisVial has allowed them to contain the deficit. Economists estimate that with the retained amount, between 20,000 and 25,000 kilometers of roads could be intervened once fiscal balance is consolidated, representing almost two-thirds of the national road network.
