Queen Máxima Makes History as First Monarch to Open WorldPride 2026

A Royal First at WorldPride 2026

On Saturday, July 25, 2026, Queen Máxima Zorreguieta (55) made history by officially opening WorldPride 2026 in Amsterdam’s Vondelpark. She is the first member of any royal family to preside over a large-scale LGBTQ+ Pride event—a powerful institutional gesture that coincided with the 25th anniversary of same-sex marriage legalization in the Netherlands.

The festival, running until August 8 and expected to attract one million visitors, was co-hosted by the queen and Amsterdam’s mayor Femke Halsema. The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage in 2001, cementing its role as a global pioneer in LGBTQ+ rights.

“Love who you want—isn’t that normal?”

Interrupting her summer vacation, the Argentine-born queen delivered a heartfelt message: “Hold each other, support each other, and enjoy. Being yourself, loving who you want—isn’t that normal?” The Dutch Royal House celebrated the day, stating that “Amsterdam is painted in all the colors of the rainbow.”

The Recycled Look That Stole the Show

A strong advocate for circular fashion, Máxima chose a sustainable yet elegant outfit. She wore a midi-length semi-sheer dress with long sleeves, a round neck, and puffed sleeves in champagne and pink tones, from her go-to Belgian label Natan Couture.

Accessories
  • Brown stilettos by Gianvito Rossi.
  • Matching leather gloves and a beige clutch.
  • Pearl drop earrings and bracelets.
The Striking Headdress

The centerpiece was a golden headpiece by Dutch designer Berry Rutjes, covered in laurel leaves that created a three-dimensional effect.

The queen demonstrated her commitment to sustainable fashion by reusing this ensemble. She had previously worn the same dress and headdress on June 18, 2019 at Royal Ascot in the UK, and on July 6, 2021 during a state visit to Germany, where she met then-Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Divided Opinions on Social Media

The historic appearance sparked debate on platform X (formerly Twitter). Some critics argued that the queen’s participation broke the political neutrality expected of a monarchy, while supporters defended it as a stand for human rights, not ideology.
