Trump Announces Historic Agreement for Total Hamas Disarmament in Gaza

31/07/2026 09:32 - Internacionales

A Milestone Toward Middle East Peace

On July 30, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump announced via his social media platform Truth Social that his Peace Council had reached a 'historic' agreement for the 'complete disarmament' of Hamas and other militant factions in the Gaza Strip. The announcement sparked cautious optimism across the region after years of devastating conflict.

According to Trump, the process will unfold in 'carefully structured phases.' As disarmament progresses, Israeli forces will withdraw from Palestinian territory, paving the way for a new era of stability and security. The agreement is seen as a potential turning point in one of the world's most intractable conflicts.

International Force and New Palestinian Government

An International Stabilization Force, operating under the auspices of the Peace Council, will work alongside a newly formed Palestinian police force to assume security responsibilities in Gaza. Meanwhile, the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (CNAG), led by Palestinian economist Ali Shaath, has declared itself ready to act. This body of technocrats will prioritize restoring essential public services, strengthening the rule of law, and leading reconstruction efforts in the devastated enclave.

Hamas Confirmation and Conditions

Senior Hamas officials confirmed the plan to the BBC and AFP. Negotiator Ghazi Hamad linked the start of weapons inventory and storage to 'the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces, the entry of the National Committee into the Gaza Strip, and the beginning of the reconstruction process.'

Notably, in early July 2026, Hamas elected Khalil al-Hayya as its new leader, replacing Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in October 2024. Al-Hayya has been leading recent ceasefire talks in Egypt and Qatar, signaling a potential shift in the group's approach.

What This Means for the Region

Gaza, a narrow strip of land along the Mediterranean coast, has been under a blockade by Israel and Egypt since 2007, when Hamas took control. The territory's 2.3 million residents have endured repeated wars and a severe humanitarian crisis. This agreement, if implemented, could end the blockade, allow reconstruction, and offer a path toward a two-state solution—a long-standing goal of the international community.

Key mediators—Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey—have played crucial roles in bridging gaps between the parties. The United Nations and the European Union have also expressed support for the deal, urging all sides to seize this opportunity for peace.
