Buenos Aires City Takes Control of Criminal Cases After Historic Agreement

03/07/2026 21:44 - Judiciales

A New Chapter for Buenos Aires Justice

The Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA), the vibrant capital of Argentina, is taking a fundamental step toward full judicial autonomy. On July 3, 2026, following the signing of a historic agreement to transfer criminal justice, the local Judicial Branch will assume control of various cases that previously fell under national jurisdiction.

Which Crimes Are Being Transferred?

With this transfer of non-federal crimes, local justice will be responsible for investigating and judging cases of slander, abuse, and kidnappings, among others. For foreigners visiting or living in Buenos Aires, it is important to note that local city courts, rather than federal entities, will handle these specific crimes, allowing for a more agile administration focused on the reality of the city's neighborhoods.

Juvenile Criminal Justice

Another highlight of the agreement is the transfer of juvenile criminal justice to the City's jurisdiction. This measure aims to provide a more specialized and appropriate approach for minors in conflict with the law, ensuring processes adapted to the regulations and specific needs of Buenos Aires.
