Police in Cleveland, England, have confirmed the arrest of twelve individuals in connection with the events leading to the tragic A66 crash near Middlesbrough, which claimed the lives of seven people, including two police officers.
The Incident
The crash occurred when a Volkswagen Passat traveling in the wrong direction on the A66 collided with an armed response police vehicle carrying PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough. The five occupants of the second vehicle, aged between 17 and 23, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Arrests and Charges
The arrested individuals, nine men and three women aged between 19 and 61, are suspected of various offenses ranging from firearms possession to participation in organized crime group activities. Additionally, it was reported that four of the deceased in the car that collided with the police vehicle had prior convictions.
Ongoing Investigation
The investigation, described as “fast-moving and complex” by Deputy Chief Constable Wayne Fox, is being conducted with the collaboration of the Durham, Northumbria, and North Yorkshire police forces. As part of the inquiries, a Volvo XC60 believed to be associated with the activities of the Volkswagen Passat's occupants was identified and recovered.
Fox emphasized that the incident will have “a lasting and profound impact on the Cleveland area” and that the force will continue its robust response in the coming weeks and months to bring all those responsible to justice.
Cleveland Police have ruled out any link between the crash and a rise in dangerous driving videos posted online, stating that “there is no evidence to suggest the incident was filmed for TikTok”.
