A Blow to Massa's Political Machine in Patagonia
The Federal Court of Rawson No. 1, presided over by Judge Hugo Ricardo Sastre, has declared the expiration of the political status of the Frente Renovador in Chubut, a province in southern Argentina. The decision, announced on August 20, 2026, stems from the party's failure to hold internal elections within the timeframe required by Law 23.298, which regulates political parties in Argentina.
According to the ruling, the party had gone more than four years without renewing its authorities. The last internal election took place in June 2022, and the mandates of its leaders expired in June 2026. The court had given the party until June 30 to prove it had held elections, but no response was received. Federal prosecutor Fernando Gélvez then supported the expiration.

The Intervention Attempt and the Court's Rejection

She informed the court that the intervention had been extended until June 2027 and requested that the expiration process be halted or that additional time be granted to present an electoral schedule. The request was rejected. The ruling stated that the intervention does not exempt the party from periodically renewing its authorities and noted that no tentative date for internal elections had even been proposed.
A Setback for Massa's Movement in the South
The Frente Renovador is the party founded by Sergio Massa, former Economy Minister and presidential candidate. In Chubut, its main figure was former governor Mariano Arcioni, who led the province from 2017 to 2023. Losing political status in this Patagonian province is a significant blow to Massa's political space, limiting its electoral options ahead of the 2027 elections.
The court's decision comes amid a reshuffling of Chubut's political landscape, with Governor Ignacio Torres seeking to expand his coalition with Peronist leaders and other sectors, while the opposition tries to reorganize.
