Just 48 hours before the polls open, Brazil's Superior Electoral Court has ordered compensation for the PT candidate's advertising in Ceará. Due to technical failures at broadcasting stations, candidate Elmano de Freitas will receive additional radio and TV slots for his final campaign push.

Ensuring Fairness in the Race

In a decisive move ahead of the first round of elections, Minister Dias Toffoli, a member of both the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil, has intervened to guarantee equality in electoral advertising in the state of Ceará.

The measure follows claims from various Brazilian broadcasting stations regarding technical issues that prevented them from complying with a previous court order dated September 24. This resulted in the candidate for the Workers' Party (PT) — one of Brazil's most influential political organizations — Elmano de Freitas, losing his designated airtime.

What is the PT?

The Partido dos Trabalhadores (Workers' Party) is a major left-wing political party in Brazil, known for its strong focus on social welfare and labor rights.

The Compensation: The coalition "Ceará Forte, do Lado Certo" will receive 30 additional seconds for every scheduled insertion between Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3.

Strict Enforcement and Sanctions

To ensure the ruling is strictly followed, the magistrate has established severe penalties for any media outlets that ignore the mandate:

Concept Measure Detail
Non-compliance Fine 100,000 reais per broadcasting station
Application Period Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3
Notified Agency Regional Electoral Court of Ceará (TRE-CE)

The timing of this resolution is critical. Regular free electoral broadcasting ended on Thursday, October 1, making these additional slots the final opportunity for high-impact messaging before the general elections on Sunday, October 4.

However, the decision has sparked controversy among political rivals. Candidate Ciro Gomes, representing the Social Democracy Party (PSDB), has already filed an appeal with the Supreme Federal Court seeking to overturn the decision and block his opponent's extra airtime.
