The President of the United States, Donald Trump, decided to prohibit the live broadcast of the shooting of Nidal Hasan, the former Army major convicted of the Fort Hood massacre. Despite having supported the severity of the sentence, the president prioritized avoiding the visual impact of the convict's death.

In a decision that marks a limit to the visibility of capital punishment, President Donald Trump canceled the live broadcast of the execution of Nidal Hasan. The military psychiatrist was convicted of the murder of 13 unarmed soldiers at the Fort Hood base, Texas, an attack that also left 32 people injured.

The president's reason: According to Trump's explanation, there are "many very good and well-meaning people" who would prefer not to witness the death of the convict, neither through a live broadcast nor by any other visual means.

The decision was not without internal tensions. The Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, had defended the visibility of the act arguing that it is necessary for society to understand that these crimes have "grave consequences". However, Trump overruled Hegseth, making it clear that the final decision regarding the broadcast rested exclusively with him.

Hasan's case is one of the most controversial in U.S. military justice due to intelligence failures prior to the attack:

  • The FBI intercepted communications between Hasan and radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.
  • The FBI counterterrorism task force determined at the time that the emails did not represent a threat.
  • Among the shooting victims was a female soldier who was pregnant.

For his part, Vice President JD Vance stayed out of the media controversy, stating categorically that he will not watch the execution. It should be noted that, in private, Trump reportedly mentioned his ignorance of the fact that Hasan is currently in a wheelchair.
