Post-2026 World Cup Health Alert: Preventing Measles Importation in Argentina

23/07/2026 22:44 - Salud

The Return of Fans and the Health Alert

The euphoria of having accompanied the Argentine National Team during the 2026 World Cup in Canada, the United States, and Mexico is still alive for thousands of fans returning to the country. In Argentina, football is a profound passion, and traveling to support the national team is a massive cultural event. However, along with their luggage, the National Ministry of Health warns about a possible risk of importing measles cases.

Epidemiological Context

According to the renowned local medical specialist Dr. Alberto Cormillot, there have been around 20,000 cases of measles in the three host countries. Up to July 16, 2026, the United States confirmed 2,260 cases across 42 states, including Texas and Florida, which are major transit points for Argentine travelers. At a regional level, the Americas reported 22,974 cases and 39 deaths in 2026.

What is measles and how is it transmitted?

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease transmitted through droplets expelled when speaking, coughing, or sneezing. Each infected person can infect up to 18 unprotected people. A positive fact highlighted by specialists is that there are no healthy carriers, which makes detection easier if one is alert to the symptoms.

Symptoms to watch out for

  • Fever of 38°C (100.4°F) or higher.
  • Red rash spreading across the skin.
  • Cough, runny nose, and red eyes.

Recommendations for those who have already returned

Authorities recommend consulting a doctor immediately if, during the trip or within 30 days after returning, a fever and rash appear. In that case, it is essential to:

  1. Wear a mask to avoid infecting others.
  2. Do not attend public places (school, work, clubs).
  3. Inform healthcare staff about the recent trip abroad.

With responsibility, isolation when necessary, and prevention, Argentina can keep the virus circulation controlled and ensure a safe winter for everyone.
