The next time you go for a walk down the street, it is worth paying attention to your own pace. The speed at which a person moves not only determines how long it takes to reach their destination: it can also offer valuable information about their general health and, in particular, about how their brain is functioning.
What is the Sixth Vital Sign?
In current geriatric practice, scientific literature already refers to gait speed as the sixth vital sign, just as important as blood pressure, pulse, or body temperature. It is the speed at which a person walks, a true parameter of the vitality of the nervous, muscular, and cardiovascular systems.
According to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia, a gait speed of less than 0.8 meters per second (about 1.8 miles per hour or 2.6 feet per second) acts as a lower threshold limit. Dropping below this threshold reflects the transition toward sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass and function) and physical frailty. The good news is that measuring it is accessible to everyone: all you need is a stopwatch, a measuring tape, and about 13 feet (4 meters) of clear hallway.
The Impact of Your Stride on Life Expectancy
The relationship between walking and health is backed by robust research. A meta-analysis conducted by the University of Pittsburgh pooled the results of nine studies that followed more than 34,000 people over 65 years old for periods ranging from 6 to 21 years.
The results were overwhelming: among the 75-year-old men analyzed, those who walked more slowly had about a 19% chance of living another ten years. However, among those with a faster gait, the probability of survival skyrocketed to 87%.
The Connection Between Your Legs and Your Brain
One of the most revealing studies was published in the journal Neurology by researchers at Duke University, who followed 904 people for decades starting at age 45. They discovered that those who walked more slowly showed signs of more advanced physical and cognitive aging.
Through MRI scans, it was observed that people with a slower gait had smaller brains, a thinner cerebral cortex (neocortex), and less white matter. White matter is the tissue in the central nervous system that connects different areas of the brain, allowing them to communicate.
Neurologist Lucía Zavala explains that in clinical neurology, we speak of a structural and cognitive reserve. A larger brain volume and preserved cortical thickness are related to a greater capacity of the nervous system to tolerate neurodegenerative damage. As the specialist aptly warns: Walking slower than normal at a premature age can indicate an alteration in brain connectivity.
In addition to walking at a good pace, Dr. Zavala mentions other physical practices with a great positive impact on neurological health:
- Dancing: Requires processing rhythm, coordinating motor sequences, and maintaining spatial orientation simultaneously.
- Racket sports: Tennis or paddle tennis force the brain into rapid visual tracking, strategic planning, and high-precision movement execution.
- Strength training: Improves the overall metabolic profile and reduces neuroinflammation, protecting the integrity of the frontal cortex.
Unlike other biological markers that require expensive tests, gait speed is a simple, economical, and non-invasive measurement. As Daniel Basoalto Rojas, director of Kinesiology at Universidad Santo Tomás, points out: Keeping our elderly walking normally and safely through strength exercise and movement is not just a matter of mobility; it is directly defending their cognitive health, their independence, and their quality of life.
