On July 28, 2026, Apple took a historic step by launching Apple Upgrade, a new business model that offers an alternative to traditional buying: renting devices through a subscription system with monthly payments. For now, this innovative service is available exclusively in the United States, both in physical stores and on the Apple Store online.
The initiative, developed in partnership with Klarna Group Plc (whose shares rose 11% after the announcement), works like a tech lease. The user pays a fixed monthly fee and, at the end of the contract, has three options:
The program offers plans from 12 to 36 months, with prices varying by device. Importantly, users must pass a credit check to qualify.
| Device | Monthly fee from | Available terms |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | USD 17.99 | 12 or 24 months |
| Apple Watch | USD 11.99 | 12 or 24 months |
| iPad | USD 11.99 | 24 or 36 months |
| Mac | USD 24.99 | 24 or 36 months |
The new payment format does not cover the entire Apple catalog. Excluded from this plan are the iPhone 16, Apple Watch SE, MacBook Neo, and the entry-level iPad. Additionally, the program does not include AppleCare coverage—a key difference from the previous iPhone Upgrade Program—and cannot be used by businesses or educational institutions.
The launch of Apple Upgrade comes just weeks after the company raised prices on its computers and tablets by nearly 20% due to rising costs of key components like RAM and storage. Meanwhile, Apple has once again become the world's most valuable company, reaching a market capitalization of 5 trillion dollars and surpassing Nvidia, driven by strong iPhone sales.
Apple had previously worked on its own subscription program, which was canceled in 2024. This time, choosing not to bear the financial risk alone, the company partnered with Klarna. In parallel with the launch of Apple Upgrade, Apple will stop accepting new users into its existing iPhone financing programs, aiming to fully replace them with this new subscription model.
