NASA is accelerating the construction of a Lunar Base near the Moon's South Pole, relying on a network of commercial landers that various companies are expected to deliver by 2028 as the foundation for a sustained surface presence. The agency announced this ambitious update on August 4, 2026.

For those unfamiliar with lunar geography, the South Pole is specifically targeted because it contains water ice in permanently shadowed craters—a crucial resource for producing drinking water and rocket fuel. The first phase of the plan extends until 2029 and includes more than 20 robotic landings. These missions will deploy scientific instruments, test technologies, and begin assembling the necessary infrastructure before astronauts arrive.
