Starting August 2026, WhatsApp will no longer support several older iPhone and Android models. Meta is updating its technical requirements to enhance security and enable new features. Find out if your device is affected and how to back up your chats before the cutoff.

The End of the Road for Older Phones

The digital world keeps evolving, and with it, the hardware demands of the most popular apps. From August 2026, millions of users worldwide will face a disruption in WhatsApp service due to a compatibility policy change by parent company Meta (formerly Facebook).

Meta periodically updates its minimum requirements to ensure the app maintains top security, stability, and performance for new features like AI-powered tools and advanced communication. The new rule is clear: only devices running Android 5.0 or higher, and Apple devices with at least iOS 15.1, will remain supported.

Affected iPhone Models

  • iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 5c and iPhone 5
  • iPhone 4s

Affected Android Models

  • Samsung: Galaxy Ace 4, S3, S4 Mini, Note 2, Core, Trend Lite
  • LG: Optimus L3 II, Optimus G, L5, L7, F7, Lucid 2, Nexus 4, G2 Mini
  • Sony: Xperia M, Z, Z2, SP
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st gen), Moto E (1st gen)
  • Huawei: Ascend Mate, Ascend G740
  • HTC: Desire 500

Upcoming Requirement Changes

Meta has already announced further tightening. From September 8, 2026, WhatsApp will only support devices with Android 6 and above. Then, from November 30, 2026, it will require iOS 15.5 or later.

What to Do If Your Phone Is on the List

Experts say the disconnection won't be instant. Initially, users will stop seeing updates, then experience frequent crashes, login errors, or trouble sending and receiving messages.

Key recommendations for affected users:

  1. Check your OS version: Go to your phone's settings to see if you meet the minimum.
  2. Back up your data: Save chats to Google Drive or iCloud before the service stops.
  3. Use WhatsApp Web: If you already have an active session, you can still access from a computer as a temporary workaround.
  4. Consider upgrading: If possible, get a newer phone to restore your account and keep your chat history.
