The Japanese space agency JAXA is preparing the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission to land on Phobos, one of Mars' moons, and collect at least 10 grams of material. The capsule is scheduled to return to Earth in 2031, landing in Australia. The goal: to understand how planets formed and how water arrived on Earth.

An Interplanetary Adventure to Decipher Our Past

Japan is about to launch one of the most ambitious space missions of the last decade: the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX). Its objective is to study Phobos, the largest moon of Mars, and bring surface samples back to Earth to answer fundamental questions about the origin of water and the compounds that made life possible on our planet.

The project, led by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA—Japan's equivalent to NASA), will take off from the Tanegashima Space Center, a prominent launch site located on a southern island of Japan, in the coming months. The unmanned spacecraft will travel for several years until it reaches Mars, where it will orbit the Red Planet for about three years. During that time, it will attempt to land softly on Phobos to collect dust and rocks, and it will also observe Deimos, the other Martian moon, without landing on it.

What Do Scientists Hope to Discover?

Scientists have debated for decades how Phobos and Deimos were formed. There are two main hypotheses: the first suggests that these moons were born after a violent impact against Mars that threw fragments into space, which later grouped together. The second proposes that they could be asteroids captured by Martian gravity at some point in the history of the solar system.

“If the moons of Mars came from other parts of space, they could contain key clues about how life appeared on planets like ours,” explained Patrick Michel, a French scientist on the project.

Analyzing material from Phobos will allow scientists to better understand the processes that gave rise to rocky planets and how water and essential elements for life arrived on Earth.

Cutting-Edge Technology and International Collaboration

The MMX mission features the participation of Japan, France, Germany, the United States, and Europe. One of its most innovative elements is the small robotic vehicle called IDEFIX, a joint French-German rover that will land on Phobos to analyze its surface directly. This rover will help complement the samples collected by the main spacecraft.

The most complex technical challenge was designing the landing legs. Due to the extremely low gravity on Phobos, the spacecraft could bounce or fly away upon touching the surface. Japanese engineers already have experience with these types of missions: in 2024, the SLIM probe landed on the Moon, although it ended up tilted; despite this, it continued sending data. Additionally, in 2020, the Hayabusa2 mission successfully brought dust from a distant asteroid back to Earth, proving Japan's capability to collect and return samples.

What Does This Mean for the Future of Exploration?

Beyond basic science, MMX will serve to test technologies that could pave the way for future crewed missions to Mars. If it is proven that landing on and taking off from Phobos is possible, this moon could become a natural forward base for exploring the Red Planet.

Meanwhile, NASA continues working with its Perseverance rover on Mars, which has already collected samples that could one day be brought to Earth, although that project faces delays. The MMX mission, on the other hand, has a more defined schedule: if all goes as planned, the capsule containing the Phobos samples will land in Australia in 2031.
