A Ghostly Discovery Two Decades Later
The Spirit rover stopped functioning in 2010, trapped in Martian sand after a mission that began in January 2004. However, its data continues to speak and has just revealed a secret that changes our understanding of the Red Planet.
A new analysis of the measurements collected by the NASA rover between 2004 and 2010 has revealed previously unnoticed traces of crystalline hematite and altered magnetite in common Martian soil. These are two iron minerals that only appear when water and rock interact over long periods of time.
Details of the Scientific Study
The finding was reportedly published on June 26, 2026 in the specialized journal Interactions and announced by Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Australia. The team was led by Professor Paulo de Souza, the lead author of the study.
Scientists did not need to collect new data. They reprocessed hundreds of individual measurements taken at 32 sites of intact soil inside the Gusev crater, where Spirit landed. This allowed them to create the most detailed profile of iron minerals ever achieved for typical Martian soil.
What is Crystalline Hematite?
Crystalline hematite is one of the most reliable indicators of past water on Mars. Although it can form through volcanic activity, it usually develops when iron-rich rocks interact with liquid water. Until now, it was believed to be practically absent at the Spirit landing site.
Background Noise Hid the Signal
The signal from these minerals was too weak to be detected in the rover's individual measurements. By combining thousands of spectra collected during six years of the mission, the team managed to extract it from the noise. Along with it appeared altered magnetite, proof that the original volcanic minerals were chemically transformed over time by water.
Implications for the Entire Planet
Since much of Mars is covered by dust and soil similar to that of the Gusev crater, the implications go far beyond that area. Chemical processes related to water could have been much more widespread across the planet than previously thought.
