The Argentine city of San Francisco (located in Córdoba province, not to be confused with California) will hold a first-of-its-kind nighttime vigil dedicated to General Martín Miguel de Güemes, one of the most important yet internationally lesser-known figures in Latin America's struggle for independence. The event, titled "Guardia Bajo las Estrellas" (Guard Under the Stars), will take place on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at 16:00 hours in the Plaza de Arquitectos Sociales, situated along the former Ferrocarril Mitre railway tracks, between Garibaldi and Perú streets.
Organized by Proyecto Arquitectos Sociales (Social Architects Project), the gathering aims to preserve the memory of those who defended Argentina's northern frontier and to educate new generations about regional history through an inclusive community event.
Güemes was a military leader and governor of Salta province who led the famous "Gauchos" — skilled horsemen of the northern plains — in a guerrilla warfare campaign against Spanish royalist forces. His military strategy successfully repelled seven royalist invasions between 1810 and 1821.
María Magdalena "Macacha" Güemes (1787-1866) was the general's sister and played a vital, though historically underrecognized, role in the independence movement. Her contributions included:
Macacha represents the countless women whose contributions to Latin American independence were essential yet often went unrecorded in official histories.
The vigil will officially introduce the "Guardia de Honor a las Glorias del Norte", an initiative to revalue the legacy of those who contributed to independence in Argentina's northern region. The ceremony takes inspiration from the traditional annual commemoration held in Salta (the capital of Güemes's home province), which recalls the general's final hours.
Additionally, the city of Salta will hold a municipal ceremony on June 16 at 18:30 at the Explanada del Cabildo (the historic town council building facing the main square), as part of the observance of the 205th anniversary of his death.
Güemes's death represents a founding tragedy in Argentine history: a popular leader, defender of the northern frontier, who fell not only from enemy fire but from internal divisions in a society unable to see compatriots in political adversaries.
In June 1821, when the royalist colonel José María "Barbarucho" Valdés (a Spaniard loyal to the crown) infiltrated Salta and surprised the general, the War of Independence revealed its bitter side: the new nation was threatened not only from outside but also torn from within.
Güemes died after days of agony from his wound, refusing to surrender and ordering his Gauchos to accept no terms that would favor the enemy. This final refusal stands as a political testament: independence was, for him, a concrete defense of territory and of the rural poor who formed the backbone of his forces.
Why Güemes matters today: His story illustrates that Latin American independence was not just battles between armies, but also civil wars with deep social dimensions. The Gauchos who fought under him were not professional soldiers but rural workers who defended their land and way of life.
