The framework agreement signed on June 17, 2026 between the United States and Iran during the G7 summit in Versailles, France, faced its first serious obstacle on June 19 when Switzerland confirmed the indefinite postponement of technical talks scheduled in Bürgenstock, near Lucerne. The cancellation came after US Vice President J.D. Vance cancelled his trip due to "unresolved logistical issues."
The main reason: Israel continued its attacks in southern Lebanon despite the memorandum of understanding establishing the "immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon." The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) justified the bombings as a response to "repeated ceasefire violations" by Hezbollah.
The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported that at least 18 people died and 33 were injured in Israeli bombings during the early hours of June 19. The bloodiest action occurred in Harouf, with 7 dead and 10 wounded.
The IDF also reported four Israeli soldiers killed, including Lieutenant Colonel Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, in an attack against a Merkava tank near Kfar Tebnit. This is the deadliest incident for the Israeli army since the war began three months ago.
Hezbollah claimed to have "destroyed three Merkava tanks with guided missiles" and stated they lured soldiers into an ambush.
A diplomat informed CNN that Iran requested guarantees that hostilities in Lebanon will cease before resuming negotiations with the United States. "The Iranians have asked for guarantees that hostilities in Lebanon will stop, as stipulated in the signed agreement," the source said.
Iran's chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned: "In case of bad faith, breach of contract and excessive demands by the other side, we will not hesitate to give a strong response to the enemy."
According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), more than 500 commercial vessels remain blocked in the Persian Gulf with approximately 11,000 sailors aboard. On June 19, the highest traffic since April was recorded with 25 vessels transiting the strait.
Captains consulted warn that normalization could take weeks. "It's not just about getting up and leaving when the light turns green," explained Captain Samanth Baktavatsalam to CNN, pointing out the danger of mines and vessel accumulation.
The Supreme National Security Council of Iran announced that the Persian Gulf Navigation Management Authority will administer traffic and vessels will not pay fees for 60 days. The United Kingdom reduced the threat level from "critical" to "moderate."
Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Jamenei, confirmed he authorized the agreement "despite having a different opinion." Iran's National Security Council warned it has a "predetermined plan" to respond if the United States breaches the pact.
In the United States, the agreement faces bipartisan criticism:
Trump, in an interview with Axios, suggested the agreement amounts to an "unconditional surrender" by Iran and declared "there are no limits" to his presidential power after the conflict.
Amid peace negotiations, a criminal court in Qom province sentenced singer Parastoo Ahmadi to 74 lashes and a two-year ban on traveling and practicing her profession for performing without a veil in a YouTube concert in December 2024.
The video has nearly 3 million views. Eight members of her band and production team were also convicted for disseminating "vulgar and immoral content."
US officials revealed to CNN that both countries drafted secret proposals to implement the 14 points of the agreement, including details about Iran's nuclear program. However, Iran did NOT sign these additional documents, only the memorandum of understanding, creating uncertainty about actual compliance with negotiations.
