In the devastating aftermath of the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24, 2026, a story of extraordinary maternal love has emerged. Andrea, wife of Venezuelan footballer Héctor "Kike" Bello, died while using her body to protect their 20-month-old daughter Alana when their residential building collapsed in La Guaira, a coastal state about 60 km west of Caracas.
The toddler was rescued alive from the rubble thanks to her mother's protective embrace. She is currently in stable condition at a local hospital, with minor injuries including a bandaged arm and a bruised eye. She is being cared for by her aunt while her father rushes to be by her side.
Héctor Bello, 28, is a defender for Marítimo de La Guaira, a club in Venezuela's second division. Born in Cumaná, he has over 24,000 Instagram followers. His emotional farewell post has touched hearts across South America.
"You will always be our favorite heroine, mommy. I will make sure to tell our baby how wonderful you were, how much you loved her. I will tell her the story of how you saved her, love, how you gave your own life for our daughter, that you were a brave woman, that with your last breath you never abandoned her."
The tragedy extends to Bello's teammate Lucas Trejo, 38, an Argentine defender playing for the same club. Trejo is desperately searching for his family: his wife Yanina Maranella and their two children, Aarón (7) and Ainhoa (5), who were in the Kumanagoto residential building in Playa Grande when the earthquakes struck.
Trejo was playing a match in Caracas when the disaster occurred. His Instagram plea read: "I'm still looking for my family, please don't stop praying for them." His brother-in-law holds onto hope that the family might not have been home due to the youngest child's football class scheduled at that time.
