German head coach Julian Nagelsmann stated this Sunday that Paraguay is a very uncomfortable opponent for Germany in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, highlighting their defensive solidity and excellent physical condition.
Nagelsmann pointed out during a press conference on the eve of the match that Paraguay plays a very defensive style of football, with a direct approach and is in very good physical shape, which will demand a lot from his team.
The German coach detailed the strengths of the South American side:
"We need a perfect match tomorrow," Nagelsmann concluded.
Arsenal forward Kai Havertz joined the praise for Paraguay and South American national teams following their 2-1 defeat to Ecuador in the group stage.
"We saw against Ecuador how well they defended and, above all, the quality that South American national teams have," Havertz stated.
"In Europe, you don't face them very often, but you notice the intensity, how aggressive they are on the pitch, and how united they are as a team together with their fans."
Paraguay is a landlocked South American nation known for its passionate football culture. Despite being smaller than regional giants Brazil and Argentina, they have a rich football history with several World Cup appearances. Their style typically emphasizes defensive organization and counter-attacks.
The 2026 World Cup is being co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, marking the first time the tournament features 48 teams.
