The globally popular messaging app WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is taking a massive leap in privacy. According to recent reports, starting June 30, 2026, it would enable the global reservation of usernames, a highly anticipated feature that would allow people to identify themselves using an alias without exposing their personal phone number.
The process is expected to be very simple. Users would be able to choose a name between 3 and 40 characters and configure it easily by navigating to: Settings > Account > Username. To add an extra layer of security, the app would include the option to protect this configuration with a 4-digit PIN.
With a massive base of 3 billion monthly users, this change represents a milestone in the protection of personal data. The measure would be implemented through a progressive rollout throughout 2026, so some devices might take a little longer to see the feature officially activated.
