On July 3, 2026, a landmark agreement was signed to transfer criminal justice responsibilities to the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA). This marks a before-and-after moment in the Argentine judicial system, as the country's capital assumes greater control over its local courts.
In Argentina, the capital city, Buenos Aires, holds a special status as an autonomous entity (CABA). Historically, while the city manages its own executive and legislative branches, much of its judicial system remained under the orbit of the national government. This new agreement shifts the balance, granting CABA full autonomy over specific criminal cases, aiming for a more efficient and locally adapted justice administration.
The local judiciary will now handle non-federal crimes, including slander, abuses, and kidnappings. Furthermore, the entire juvenile criminal justice system will be fully transferred to the local jurisdiction, ensuring a specialized approach for minors in conflict with the law.
This transfer has been under discussion for some time as a way to optimize the administration of justice in the capital. By formalizing this agreement between national and city authorities, CABA consolidates its judicial independence. This promises to improve resolution times and the overall quality of judicial processes for the residents of Buenos Aires, bringing justice closer to the people.
