The province of Santa Cruz, located in the deep south of Argentina in the vast region known as Patagonia, is experiencing a historic polar wave. According to the General Administration of Provincial Highways (AGVP) through its weather reports N° 40 and N° 041/2026, the arrival of the most severe cold air system of 2026 is expected.
The phenomenon, which intensifies from July 19, 2026, will bring weak to moderate snowfalls and a marked drop in temperature. Maximum temperatures will not exceed 0 °C (32 °F) in large areas of the western and central parts of the province, setting up the coldest period of the year.
Weather models anticipate that a low-pressure center moving across the Pacific Ocean will impact the Chilean coast between the night of Wednesday, July 22 and the early morning of Thursday, July 23. This will generate an influx of moist air that will increase precipitation.
This scenario favors the presence of intense and prolonged frost, as well as the formation of ice and frost on the roads, mainly during the night and early morning hours.
The Provincial Road Safety Agency (APSV) reported restricted circulation on various stretches due to poor visibility and snow accumulation, based on the update issued on July 19, 2026:

Authorities reminded drivers that, according to Disposition 002/18, carrying snow chains is mandatory throughout the winter season to travel on national and provincial routes in Santa Cruz. The technical area of Provincial Highways conducts inspections to verify this essential requirement, which is vital to avoid skidding or collisions on frozen surfaces.
Fortunately, the teams from the Gobernador Gregores Road District are working tirelessly with specialized machinery. They are currently clearing snow on the Brizic Climb and on the stretch between the La Guillermina Fixed Post and Gobernador Gregores. Additionally, salt is being distributed on the road surface to improve traction in the presence of ice.
