The stable release of Android 17 began on June 17, 2026, less than a month after its official presentation at Google I/O 2026. This version brings one of the most anticipated improvements: the centralization of WhatsApp backups in Android settings.
This innovation solves one of the most frustrating problems when switching phones: losing WhatsApp messages and files due to failed restoration. Now, the operating system manages these backups directly, allowing users to easily access their copies from device settings.
Previously, WhatsApp backups depended exclusively on the Meta app and were stored in Google Drive. The process was confusing for many users and prone to errors. With Android 17:
Important: The backup is still stored in Google Drive and WhatsApp still generates it. The innovation is the unified management interface.
Another major innovation in Android 17 is the introduction of App Bubbles, an evolution of floating bubbles that previously only worked in messaging apps. Now, any application can become a floating window by long-pressing its icon on the home screen.
This feature allows keeping multiple apps open as notes, maps, or videos that overlay other applications without interrupting work or entertainment. On tablets and foldable devices, bubbles reach their full potential: they can be anchored to a bottom bar for easy task switching.
Android 17 introduces Foldable Gaming Mode, specifically designed for foldable phones like the Pixel Fold. When activated, the screen divides into two halves:
Top half: Shows the game in full screen
Bottom half: Transforms into a customizable controller
This mode also includes new button mapping for external controllers, offering a portable gaming experience adapted to the most innovative devices on the market.
Privacy has been a priority in Android 17. Key improvements include:
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| One-time location | Removes permanent location access option; only allows access during active app session |
| Contact picker | Allows sharing a single contact instead of entire contact list |
| Reinforced Find Hub | Requires biometric identification (fingerprint or face) to mark device as lost |
| PIN lockout | Blocks repeated attempts to guess unlock PIN |
| RAM limits | Establishes memory consumption limits for apps using excessive resources |
Alongside Android 17, Google released the June Pixel Feature Drop update package, exclusive to Pixel phones. New features include:
The stable Android 17 rollout is targeted exclusively for Pixel devices in this first stage. Other device manufacturers will adapt the system during the rest of 2026 and early 2027.
Compatible models:
Note: Foldable gaming mode and Gemini Intelligence (AI integration in the system) will arrive in the coming months only for selected devices.
To install the update on a compatible Pixel device:
The rollout is progressive, so it may take several days to reach all devices.
