Uruguayan manager Rodolfo Arruabarrena has kicked off his second tenure at Boca Juniors with firm moves that set the tone for the club's future. Without hesitation, he has identified which players are not part of his plans and has begun shaping a competitive squad for the second half of 2026.
Boca Juniors is one of Argentina's most successful and popular football clubs, based in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of La Boca. Founded in 1905, the club has won numerous domestic and international titles, including multiple Copa Libertadores trophies. Their iconic blue and yellow colors and passionate fan base make them a giant of South American football.
The most significant decision was the complete disassociation from Edinson Cavani. The 39-year-old Uruguayan striker mutually terminated his contract, which was originally set to expire on December 31, 2026. According to journalist Martín Arévalo, there was a verbal agreement between both parties: Cavani will receive payment until his last working day without compensation for the remaining 6 months.
Arruabarrena justified the move due to the striker's physical complications and his absence of over 6 months from training with the main squad. One week before the decision, Cavani underwent a lumbar block procedure (radiofrequency thermolesion) in an attempt to recover his form.
Best performance: 2024 with 20 goals under Diego Martínez | Trophies: 0
Arruabarrena summoned three young players to join pre-season:
The striker, who arrived at Boca in 2024 after his stint at Valencia and PSG, is not considering retirement. According to sources, he is evaluating a return to Uruguay to continue his career. In 2026, he only played 2 matches (vs Racing and Platense) totaling 104 minutes on the pitch.
Boca's pre-season began on June 18, 2026 at the Boca Predio training complex. Arruabarrena will have the opportunity to work with a renewed squad and define necessary signings to face the second half of the year.
Nicknamed El Vasco (The Basque) due to his Basque ancestry, Arruabarrena is a Uruguayan former defender who played for Boca Juniors as a player. His first managerial stint at the club came in 2014-2015, where he won domestic titles. Known for his tactical discipline and strong personality, his return marks a new chapter in Boca's history.
