A tragedy shook the province of La Pampa on June 22, 2026, when four women lost their lives after their vehicle plunged into a lagoon in Bajo Giuliano. The accident occurred at the intersection of Provincial Route 14 and National Route 35, a potentially dangerous T-junction that reportedly lacked proper lighting.
For our international readers: La Pampa is a province in central Argentina, known for its vast plains and agricultural landscapes. Bajo Giuliano is located near the city of Santa Rosa, the provincial capital. This region features numerous natural lagoons that can pose risks near roadways.
The vehicle involved was a Ford EcoSport carrying five people. The driver, the sole survivor of this terrible accident, managed to escape while the other four occupants—all sisters according to sources—remained trapped inside the vehicle.
Authorities are investigating lack of lighting at the T-intersection as the main hypothesis. This critical point on the Pampean roads may have caused confusion for the driver, leading the vehicle into the lagoon.
The lagoon water was at only 3°C (37°F), which extremely complicated any rescue or escape attempts.
The victims were traveling from the town of 25 de Mayo to Santa Rosa to visit a hospitalized family member. 25 de Mayo is a small town approximately 150 kilometers from Santa Rosa. What began as a gesture of love and family solidarity ended as one of the most painful traffic tragedies of the year for the province.
The rescue operation involved La Pampa Police, volunteer firefighters, and SEM (Medical Emergency Service), who worked intensively at the accident scene.
This fatal accident adds to another similar incident that occurred just two days earlier, on June 20, 2026, on Route 9 in Baradero (a city in Buenos Aires province, about 140 km from the capital). In that case, three people died after falling into a stream at Cañada Honda: a woman, her baby, and her father-in-law. The driver (the woman's husband) survived.
The coincidence of both incidents with vehicles falling into bodies of water raises an alert about road safety at intersections near lagoons and streams, especially in contexts of poor nighttime lighting.
The investigation is being conducted by judicial authorities and La Pampa police, who will determine the exact causes of the accident.
