Ukraine Requests Urgent UN Meeting Following Massive Russian Drone and Missile Strike on Kyiv

06/07/2026 10:23 - Internacionales

A Massive Strike on the Capital

According to Infobae, on July 6, 2026, Ukraine requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council following what it described as the second massive attack in just a few days by Russia against the capital city, Kyiv.

Ukrainian authorities detailed that this latest barrage included the launch of over 350 drones and around 70 missiles, as reported by the Ukrainian Air Force. Kyiv's Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, and the head of the city's military administration, Timur Tkachenko, confirmed the activation of air defense systems. Hours before the strike, President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned about the imminent bombardment.

The most severe impact was recorded in the Podilskyi district, where a missile directly struck a residential building, destroying floors 7, 8, and 9. Additionally, debris damage was reported in the Holosiivskyi and Darnytskyi districts. The tragic preliminary toll indicates at least 14 deaths in Kyiv from this bombardment, raising the total to 45 fatalities in the past week in the city.

A Call to the International Community

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha was the official who elevated the petition to the UN. The official stated that late or weak responses cannot stop terror and that only firm, principle-based, and timely action will manage to halt the violence. Sybiha requested support from the Presidency of the Security Council, which is currently held by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Sybiha emphasized that every Russian missile launched against Ukraine seeks to prove that fear is stronger than solidarity. Kyiv's hope lies in the international community remaining united to deter the aggressor and promote a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace.

Russia's Response and Simultaneous Attacks

For its part, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed a massive attack on Ukrainian facilities, describing it as a response to terrorist attacks by the Kyiv regime against civilian infrastructure in Russia. Moscow claimed to have struck military and energy industry facilities in Kyiv, as well as military airfield infrastructure in the regions of Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv.

Simultaneously, according to Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev, the city of Sevastopol in Crimea suffered a total blackout following a Ukrainian attack on its energy infrastructure. This conflict, which has kept the region on edge since 2022, continues to cause material damage while the world awaits effective diplomatic responses.
