A Moment of Joy Tinged with Sadness in Cañuelas

The town of Cañuelas, located in the Buenos Aires province, is in deep shock following the death of Franco Daniel Depauli, a beloved 46-year-old resident of the Levene neighborhood. He fell victim to a violent act while celebrating with his family the agonizing victory of the Argentine National Team against Egypt in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at the intersection of Libertad and 25 de Mayo streets, right in front of Plaza San Martín. According to his relatives, Depauli was celebrating at a local bar. Noticing disturbances in the street, he went to his car, parked in front of the establishment, to retrieve an item from the trunk. At that moment, he was struck in the head by a stone thrown by one of the participants of a street fight.

The Quick Reaction of His Loved Ones

After the impact, the victim collapsed to the ground and was immediately assisted by his relatives. Because the massive crowd prevented an ambulance from arriving quickly, his own family urgently transported him to Hospital Marzetti. The hospital's director, Hernán Carpio, confirmed that Depauli arrived without vital signs and that the medical team attempted to resuscitate him for 50 minutes without success.

The Attacker and the Viral Video

Witness cameras were key to clarifying the case. A video circulating on social media shows Franco moments before the attack, deeply emotional, shouting: "Let's go, damn it, let's go! We never lost the faith" amidst the honking of cars.

Thanks to these recordings, the Police arrested I. N. L., a 20-year-old with a criminal record for theft, identified as the alleged perpetrator. He was placed under the custody of the local prosecutor's office charged with simple homicide.

The Municipality's Request and Community Mourning

The Municipality of Cañuelas strongly condemned the event and declared 48 hours of community mourning. The Secretariat of Security requested that anyone who recorded the moment of the attack send the footage anonymously to WhatsApp 2226 51-3154 or to the email Comvisualizacionescanuelas@gmail.com to advance the investigation and find justice for Franco.
