Milei in Tucumán for July 9th Celebrations

As part of the celebrations for Argentina's Independence Day, President Javier Milei traveled to the northern province of Tucumán to participate in the vigil of July 9, 2026. The president will lead the central ceremonies, reaffirming his presence in the country's interior on a date of profound historical significance. For international context, Tucumán is the exact birthplace of Argentina, where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1816.

2027 Reelection Strategy

Looking ahead to the next general elections, the government is consolidating its political strategy for reelection in 2027. The plan is based on maintaining economic stability, with a controlled exchange rate, decreasing inflation, and the recovery of purchasing power.

Political negotiations are being led by Diego Santilli, who took office as Chief of Cabinet on June 30, 2026. A central point on the agenda is the elimination of the PASO (Primarias, Abiertas, Simultáneas y Obligatorias), Argentina's mandatory open primary system. The administration aims to pass this project before September 2026.

Economic and Financial Context

The economic landscape shows positive signals that the government seeks to capitalize on. The country risk stands at 408-412 basis points, a level not seen since 2018.

The US dollar at Banco Nación (the state-owned bank) trades at $1,510 ARS, while the Central Bank's Market Expectations Survey (REM) projects the currency will reach $1,673 ARS by December 2026.

Additionally, Minister of Economy Luis Caputo presented the 2026/2027 financial plan, projecting a surplus of USD 3.7 billion for the current year.

State Shutdown Proposal and Vice Presidency Stance

On the institutional front, a project was announced to implement a 'shutdown' (government closure) mechanism in the Executive Branch if the budget is exhausted, a measure inspired by the United States system. In response to this proposal, Vice President Victoria Villarruel distanced herself and criticized the initiative, marking a point of divergence within the ruling party.

On another note, rumors spread about alleged illicit enrichment by official spokesperson Manuel Adorni were dismissed, being categorized as a political operation by the Peronist opposition.
