Buenos Aires Teachers and State Workers Secure 7% Salary Increase

09/07/2026 12:57 - Economia

A Breakthrough for Buenos Aires Public Workers

After intense negotiations and an initial show of force through a massive strike on July 1, 2026, the provincial government of Buenos Aires has successfully sealed a new collective bargaining agreement (known locally as paritaria). The accepted proposal grants a 7% salary increase divided into two phases, bringing much-needed relief to thousands of public sector employees.

Details of the Salary Increment

The agreed increase will be applied directly to the base salaries, which guarantees that the adjustment will also be reflected in the pensions of retired teachers and state workers. The distribution is structured as follows: a 5% increase in July 2026 and an additional 2% in August 2026. To ensure wages keep up with the cost of living, the unions and the government have scheduled a new negotiation round for September 2026 to evaluate the economic situation and inflationary trends.

Improvements in Working Conditions

This landmark agreement goes beyond mere numbers on a paycheck. For the education sector, the government and unions incorporated a crucial addendum for the prevention, protection, and reparation of violence and harassment—a historical demand from teachers who face challenging environments. Furthermore, the province will launch the campaign Cuidemos a quienes enseñan (Let's protect those who teach) to promote school safety.

For administrative employees under Law 10430 (the foundational public employment statute for Buenos Aires Province), the deal includes a massive win: permanent hiring status for personnel who joined between 2024 and 2025. Additionally, the selection processes for hierarchical positions will be modified to ensure better transparency and career progression.

Next Steps

The provincial government is now expected to extend a similar offer to other public sectors, including Healthcare professionals, Justice employees, Police officers, and Penitentiary Service agents, who maintain independent negotiation tracks.

The Federation of Buenos Aires Educators (FEB) approved the proposal by a narrow margin, reflecting some lingering concerns within the sector, while still valuing the significant advancements in workplace safety and stability.
