IMF Praises Argentina's Financial Plan and Central Bank Reform

A Strong International Backing for Argentina's Economy

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) celebrated on July 9, 2026, the financial program presented by the national government and supported the intention to reform the Charter of the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA). According to the organization's spokesperson, Julie Kozack, during a press conference in Washington, these measures will bring predictability and confidence to the markets.

The Financial Plan and Debt Payment

Economy Minister Luis Caputo recently presented the financial plan to face the Treasury's foreign currency maturities for the remainder of 2026 and 2027. This announcement was very well received, causing the country risk to drop to 405 basis points, its lowest level since late April 2018.

In this context, on July 8, 2026, the BCRA made the payment of USD 2.5 billion for Global bonds maturity. To cover this outlay, the government secured loans for USD 3.2 billion with international banks (BBVA, Santander, and Deutsche Bank), guaranteed by the IDB and IBRD. After this operation, BCRA reserves stood at USD 48.722 billion, showing solid resource management and maintaining 124 consecutive rounds of buying foreign currency.

Reform of the BCRA's Charter

The IMF also endorsed the project to modify the BCRA's Charter. Kozack explained that this reform will strengthen institutional safeguards and protect independence in monetary policy matters.

Optimistic Projections and a Historic Visit

The multilateral organization ratified its growth projections for Argentina: a 3.5% GDP expansion is expected in 2026 and 4% in 2027, stringing together three consecutive years of economic expansion. Additionally, inflation is projected to continue decreasing gradually.

As a great sign of this fluid relationship, the IMF's Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, will visit Buenos Aires on July 28 and 29 at the invitation of President Javier Milei. She is expected to hold meetings with government authorities and social actors.
