President Javier Milei led the celebrations on July 9, 2026, marking the 210th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in the historic city of San Miguel de Tucuman. For international readers, Tucuman is the cradle of Argentine independence, where the Congress formally declared separation from Spain in 1816. The president was accompanied by his cabinet and over a dozen provincial governors.
In a nationwide broadcast speech from the Historic House of Tucuman (Casa Historica), the head of state highlighted his intention to implement a new package of reforms before the 2027 presidential elections. 'We do not have a second to lose,' Milei stated, mentioning projects such as the electoral reform, the law of inviolability of private property, and the Super RIGI.
The Super RIGI is an expansion of the current RIGI (Regime of Incentives for Large Investments), a legal framework offering tax and customs benefits to major foreign and domestic investments. The president also reviewed the measures adopted since taking office, recalling the 'Pact of May' signed with governors in 2024, and emphasizing: 'We made the largest fiscal adjustment in history, lifted the currency controls (cepo), and approved the RIGI.'
The governor of Tucuman, Osvaldo Jaldo, hosted the event, which was attended by 12 other provincial authorities. Those present included Alfredo Cornejo (Mendoza), Juan Pablo Valdés (Corrientes), Marcelo Orrego (San Juan), Gustavo Sáenz (Salta), Raúl Jalil (Catamarca), Carlos Sadir (Jujuy), Rogelio Frigerio (Entre Ríos), Rolando Figueroa (Neuquén), Ignacio Torres (Chubut), Claudio Vidal (Santa Cruz), Leandro Zdero (Chaco), and Elías Suárez (Santiago del Estero). Representing the province of Cordoba was the vice-governor, Myrian Prunotto.
Among the notable absences was the governor of Santa Fe, Maximiliano Pullaro.
Following the event in Tucuman, the focus shifted to the Metropolitan Cathedral in Buenos Aires. There, the traditional Te Deum ceremony for Independence Day was held, presided over by the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Jorge García Cuerva. The Te Deum is a traditional Catholic hymn of praise sung during major civic events in Argentina. During this ceremony, Milei and the Mayor of Buenos Aires, Jorge Macri, showed a public reconciliation.
The President approached Macri, who was accompanied by his wife, journalist Belén Ludueña, and warmly congratulated the couple on the birth of their son, Vito. This exchange of hugs marked a stark contrast with May 25, 2025, when Milei had notably avoided greeting the city mayor in the exact same setting.
