President Javier Milei led the events for the 210th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence this July 9, 2026, a day marked by political announcements, reconciliation gestures, and strong international backing for the national government's economic plan.
In the early hours of Thursday, Milei led the vigil at the Historic House of San Miguel de Tucumán (the site where Argentina declared independence from Spain in 1816), accompanied by 13 governors and his cabinet of ministers. In his nationally broadcast speech, the President recalled the Pact of May signed in 2024 and announced that he will seek to implement a package of reforms, including electoral reform, the inviolability of private property, and the so-called Super RIGI (a large investment incentive regime), before the 2027 elections.
Vice President Victoria Villarruel also traveled to Tucumán and described Milei's speech as highly political. She also distanced herself from the government shutdown project driven by the Executive branch. Meanwhile, governors such as Martín Llaryora (Córdoba) and Maximiliano Pullaro (Santa Fe) did not attend the Tucumán event and used their speeches to mark economic differences with the national government, asking to reactivate the domestic economy.
Hours later, in Buenos Aires, Milei participated in the traditional Te Deum (a Catholic mass of thanksgiving typically held on national holidays) at the Metropolitan Cathedral, presided over by Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva. In his homily, the prelate asked for unity among Argentines, cited the captain of the National Soccer Team, Lionel Messi, and called for combating corruption and indifference towards those who suffer.
The event was also the stage for a reconciliation gesture between the President and the Head of the Buenos Aires City Government, Jorge Macri. Milei approached to greet him on two occasions and was seen smiling while Macri gave a baby bottle to his son Vito, thus overcoming the tensions that had broken their bond after the city elections in 2025.
On the economic front, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) gave strong support to the reform of the charter of the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA) and praised the financial program presented for 2026 and 2027. The organization's Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, will visit Argentina on July 28 and 29.
Argentina's country risk (a measure of the premium investors demand to hold Argentine debt versus US Treasuries) dropped to 405 basis points, its lowest level in 8 years. For its part, the United States government, through a letter signed by the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, congratulated Argentina on its anniversary and described it as an indispensable partner in the region, committing to expand collaboration in critical minerals and civilian nuclear energy.
