The 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to generate passions that transcend the football pitches and reach political spheres. The Deputy Governor of the Argentine province of Mendoza, Hebe Casado, finds herself at the center of a diplomatic storm after posting a controversial message on the social network X.
For international context, Mendoza is one of Argentina's most prominent provinces, located in the western part of the country at the foothills of the Andes. According to reports from local media such as MDZol and Ámbito, the controversy began on July 4, 2026, after the French national team defeated Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16 of the tournament. On her account, Casado wrote: 'Muy bien Paraguay. El equipo africano flojo de modales. No lo aguanto a Mbappe' (Very well Paraguay. The African team lacking in manners. I can't stand Mbappe).
On July 11, 2026, the French Embassy in Argentina took drastic measures and declared Casado 'persona non grata'. In diplomatic terms, this is the most severe form of censure a host country can apply to a foreign official, but in this case, it was applied to a local official, meaning she will not be able to set foot in the diplomatic headquarters or participate in meetings with French authorities unless she offers a public retraction. The French Ambassador, Romain Nadal, was unequivocal on the matter.
Hebe Casado serves as the Deputy Governor of Mendoza in an alliance with Alfredo Cornejo from the UCR (Unión Cívica Radical, a traditional center-right political party in Argentina). However, she has recently shown an approach towards La Libertad Avanza (LLA), the coalition of libertarian President Javier Milei, describing Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich as her mentor.
This diplomatic conflict also unfolds in a context of a fierce football rivalry between France and Argentina, which dates back to the historic 2022 World Cup final in Qatar and remains highly charged in the current tournament. In the 2026 World Cup, figures like Kylian Mbappé have been involved in tense moments with Argentine refereeing during the quarter-finals, adding fuel to an already fiery sporting atmosphere.
