Milei's Electoral Lab for 2027: Reelection, Shutdown, and AI

Milei Revs Up Electoral Machinery for 2027

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup reaching its final stages, the government of Javier Milei is starting the engines of its electoral strategy for the 2027 presidential elections. According to reports from local media like Cenital and La Nación, the libertarian laboratory focuses on consolidating power and improving reelection chances.

In this context, former Chief of Cabinet Guillermo Francos expressed optimism about a new term for Milei: "Not only do I believe it is necessary, but I also believe he will achieve it," he stated in an interview with LN+.

The Crusade to Eliminate PASO Primaries

One of the cornerstones of the ruling party's plan is the elimination or suspension of the PASO (Open, Simultaneous, and Mandatory Primaries). For context, PASO is a unique Argentine electoral system where all political parties must compete in a primary election before the general elections to validate their candidates. The internal theory, driven by strategist Santiago Caputo, suggests that without these primaries, a fragmented Peronist opposition (the country's dominant traditional political movement) would see its chances diminished.

However, the ruling coalition, La Libertad Avanza (LLA), still lacks the necessary votes in the Senate (they need 37 senators but only have 21) and faces resistance from the PRO, a center-right party led by Patricia Bullrich, who rejected joint electoral lists.

To unblock this scenario, Diego Santilli is acting as a negotiating bridge with governors from the UCR (the traditional Radical Civic Union) and the PRO. The ruling party is evaluating a menu of options: running together, presenting their own lists to divide the opposition, or not presenting libertarian candidates to avoid stealing votes from allies.

The Shutdown of Argentina

The government also plans to send a package of reforms to Congress, including a local adaptation of the United States' shutdown (government closure) mechanism. This would be triggered automatically if a fiscal deficit exists. This initiative, driven by Economy Minister Luis Caputo and Federico Sturzenegger, seeks to give legal force to the fiscal surplus.

Abstentionism Factor

The libertarian electoral design contemplates a scenario of low voter turnout. According to data from the National Electoral Chamber (CNE), absenteeism in the 2025 general elections reached 34.52% among young people aged 18 to 30. The libertarian lab believes a hardcore nucleus of voters could stretch a 32% voting intention to the 40% needed to avoid a runoff election (balotaje).

The Punteros of AI

Artificial intelligence is emerging as a new actor in the electoral ring. International studies warn about biases in chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok. The recent visit of tech billionaire Peter Thiel to Argentina sparked speculation. Thiel reportedly met with social leader Juan Grabois to discuss the encyclical of Pope Leo XIV. Experts warn that AI could be locally poisoned to influence public opinion ahead of 2027.

Sports and Politics: The National Team at the Pink House

In a lighter tone, Senator Patricia Bullrich countered criticism about the possible visit of the Argentine National Team to the Casa Rosada (the seat of the executive branch, similar to the White House) following the 2026 World Cup. "We Argentines know how to separate things. A government is one thing, and cheering for the national team is another," Bullrich said, emphasizing that the goal is to celebrate with the people in the Plaza de Mayo, not a political endorsement of the President.

Date of the event: July 13, 2026. The scenario for 2027 is shaping up to be one of the most disruptive and technological elections in Argentine history, where provincial alliances, the economy, and technology will define the country's future.
