Excitement in Buenos Aires: Rare Snow Turns the Province White

A White Sunrise in Buenos Aires Province

July 2, 2026

The polar wave that has taken the center and north of Argentina by surprise has left unforgettable images in the province of Buenos Aires. As reported on July 2, 2026, residents of various towns in the Buenos Aires province (known as bonaerenses) woke up excited to find their streets and gardens covered in a white blanket due to snowfall.

This phenomenon, which is very rare in the region, was welcomed with joy and astonishment by the locals, who took to the streets and social media to share the experience. The excitement of the residents was palpable, enjoying a landscape that is usually only associated with the south of the country or the Andes mountain range.

Context of the Polar Wave

The snow in Buenos Aires is part of a polar cold front that has triggered alerts in several provinces. For context, in Mendoza (a province in western Argentina at the foot of the Andes), the General Directorate of Schools suspended in-person classes on July 2, 2026, due to temperatures of up to -5°C, snow, and winds reaching 100 km/h. In the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA, which includes the city of Buenos Aires and its surrounding suburbs) and nearby areas, temperatures dropped significantly, allowing precipitation to manifest as snow in several parts of the province.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN, for its acronym in Spanish) had warned about the sudden drop in temperatures. Families took advantage of the day to build snowmen and admire the unusual scenery, showing that even in intense cold, there is room for surprise and community enjoyment before temperatures begin to recover in the coming days.
