A historic breakthrough in regional security was achieved on Friday, June 12, 2026 at the Desaguadero border checkpoint, where Mendoza and San Luis—two provinces in central-western Argentina—inaugurated the country's first Unified Control Zone. This model integrates operational controls, cutting-edge technology, information exchange, and permanent coordination between the security forces of both provinces.
The Unified Control Zone is a joint working model that integrates:
The inauguration ceremony was led by Governor Alfredo Cornejo (Mendoza) and Governor Claudio Poggi (San Luis). Also in attendance:
Alejandra Monteoliva
National Minister of Security
Federal government representative overseeing national security policies
Mercedes Rus
Minister of Security of Mendoza
Provincial security chief for Argentina's fourth-most populous province
Nancy Sosa
Minister of Security of San Luis

This initiative represents a new advancement in the Regional Security Plan that Mendoza, San Luis, and San Juan have been promoting since May 31, 2024. The goal is to build a common strategy against criminal phenomena that transcend provincial boundaries.
According to Minister Nancy Sosa, the center will allow "sharing information about everything circulating through the Bioceanic Corridor", strengthening preventive capacity against any criminal activity.

The Monitoring Center integrates with the Federal Digital Ring, a national system that enables real-time detection of vehicles with seizure orders. The agreement was ratified in Mendoza through Law 9667.
Governor Cornejo emphasized that "organized crime, by definition, is organized" and warned that the State must achieve similar levels of coordination to combat it effectively.
Cornejo highlighted Mendoza's technological infrastructure developed for criminal investigation:
Leader in Latin America with over 100,000 samples collected. Capacity available to share with other jurisdictions through agreements.
Creation of specialized laboratories in cybercrime to combat new criminal threats.
National Senator Bartolomé Abdala (LLA) highlighted that the Global Peace Index 2025 positioned Argentina as the safest country in Latin America, with the lowest homicide rate in the region.
