Before diving into the current controversy, it's essential to understand this distinctly Argentine invention. The plan de ahorro (savings plan) is a financing mechanism that allows consumers to purchase vehicles in installments over 7 to 10 years through a combination of monthly payments, lotteries (sorteos), and bids (licitaciones). It was designed for people who cannot afford a cash purchase or qualify for traditional bank loans.
Think of it as a hybrid between a savings account and a lottery: subscribers pay monthly installments into a pool, and vehicles are distributed through random drawings or competitive bidding among members. It has been the primary way Argentina's middle class accesses new cars for decades.
A price war among Argentine dealerships has exposed an uncomfortable reality: savings plan subscribers now pay up to 25% more than cash buyers for the same vehicle. While dealerships offer discounts of up to 30% for cash purchases, subscribers remain tied to official list prices published by manufacturers each month.
"Three years ago, the situation was exactly the opposite," an automotive executive explained to Infobae. "Whoever subscribed to a savings plan in 2022 made a good deal because they could bid for a car at list price, avoiding surcharges. But today, that same person pays installments that, when calculated, result in a much higher price than current cash prices."
232,815 private cars and light commercial vehicles sold in the first 5 months.
52,289 savings plans billed in the same period.
This represents 22% of total market operations.
Only 12 automotive brands offer savings plans in Argentina.
Understanding which manufacturers rely on this system helps explain the market dynamics. Stellantis Group brands (Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat) lead in savings plan adoption, while brands focused on premium segments show different patterns.
| Brand | Registrations (Jan-May) | Plans Awarded | Plan Participation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peugeot | 17,885 | 8,777 | 49% |
| Citroën | 9,081 | 3,594 | 39.5% |
| Mercedes-Benz | 4,451 | 1,657 | 37.2% |
| Nissan | 5,924 | 2,106 | 35.5% |
| Fiat | 28,777 | 9,973 | 34.6% |
| Jeep | 6,187 | 1,694 | 27.3% |
| Toyota | 31,711 | 8,475 | 26.7% |
| RAM | 2,724 | 609 | 22.3% |
| Renault | 17,740 | 3,605 | 20.3% |
| Chevrolet | 19,720 | 3,912 | 19.8% |
| Volkswagen | 32,317 | 4,995 | 15.4% |
| Ford | 22,393 | 2,897 | 12.9% |
Despite ranking fourth in total sales with 22,393 units, Ford shows only 12.9% participation in savings plans. The explanation is simple: Ford does not offer vehicles in economy segments, where savings plans are most popular among buyers who cannot access other financing.
Mercedes-Benz recently launched its savings plans under Prestige Auto administration and already reached 37.2% participation. Nissan, despite lower volumes, shows 35.5% plan participation, demonstrating that even non-traditional players see value in this financing mechanism.
The savings plan remains a crucial tool for accessing new vehicles (0 km) for those without initial capital or bank financing options. However, the current price war creates an asymmetry: cash buyers get significant discounts while plan subscribers pay official list prices.
Three years ago, during inventory shortages, dealerships charged surcharges of 30-40% above list price. Plan subscribers who won their cars through lottery or bidding avoided those surcharges. Today, the opposite is true: the market is flooded with inventory, dealers offer discounts, and plan subscribers are locked into higher prices.
Argentina's automotive sector is highly sensitive to economic fluctuations. The country has experienced inflation rates exceeding 100% annually, currency controls (cepo), and import restrictions that create constant supply-demand imbalances. These conditions make the savings plan particularly attractive during shortages—but problematic when dealerships need to clear inventory.
