Puente de estructura metálica sobre un cañón con vegetación y rocas, altura considerable, ambiente natural de sierras brasileñas
What was meant to be an adrenaline-filled day of adventure ended in tragedy on Saturday, June 13, 2026 in Brazil. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, a young woman of just 21 years old, lost her life after instructors launched her into a freefall from a height of 40 meters (approximately 131 feet) without attaching the necessary safety equipment.
The horrifying incident occurred at the well-known Skeleton Bridge (Puente del Esqueleto), located in the municipality of Limeira, in the interior of São Paulo state. This location is popular among extreme sports enthusiasts due to its natural rock formations and mountainous geography.
Rope jump (also called "salto com corda" in Portuguese) is an extreme sport that involves jumping from considerable heights—typically from bridges, cliffs, or platforms—using specialized safety ropes and harnesses. The jumper experiences a controlled pendulum swing before being safely suspended in the air.
Unlike bungee jumping, where the elastic cord causes the jumper to bounce back up, rope jumping uses static ropes that create a smoother, more controlled pendulum motion. This activity is considered high-risk and requires:
| Feature | Rope Jump | Bungee Jumping |
|---|---|---|
| Rope Type | Static (non-elastic) | Elastic cord |
| Motion | Pendulum swing | Bouncing rebound |
| Equipment | Harness + multiple anchors | Ankle harness + single cord |
According to local authorities, the victim was participating in an activity coordinated by two companies that organize these types of extreme jumps in the region. However, videos circulated on social media show the moment when several people transported the young woman to the jumping point.
The most shocking aspect is that the instructors failed to attach her safety equipment, according to witnesses present at the scene. Seconds after Maria Eduarda was thrown into the void, alarmed screams were heard warning that the safety rope was missing.
Emergency response teams from the local Fire Department (Corpo de Bombeiros) and the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU - Serviço de Atendimento Móvel de Urgência) responded to the scene, but the young woman's death was confirmed at the accident site.
After the accident, two of the suspects attempted to flee into a nearby wooded area. Both were later located through a police search operation.
In total, six individuals were detained and taken in for questioning before authorities. The investigation is expected to determine criminal liability and whether there was gross negligence on the part of the organizing companies.
Brazilian authorities have emphasized that this case could result in serious criminal charges, potentially including involuntary manslaughter (homicídio culposo) charges under Brazilian penal law.
Before engaging in extreme activities:
Brazil has become a major destination for extreme sports enthusiasts, with locations like São Paulo state, Rio de Janeiro, and the Chapada Diamantina in Bahia offering various activities including rafting, hang gliding, and rope jumping. However, this tragedy highlights the critical importance of stringent safety regulations in an industry that attracts thousands of adventure seekers annually. Authorities across Brazil have periodically called for tighter oversight of adventure tourism operators following similar incidents.
