El hemiciclo del Senado argentino durante una sesión legislativa, con los legisladores en sus bancas y el ambiente tenso propio de un debate político de alto impacto
The Argentine Senate postponed its session until June 25, 2024, a maneuver that allows the government to delay proceedings regarding the interpellation of Manuel Adorni. However, the measure failed to halt the consensus forming among opposition and dialogue-oriented blocs to summon the Cabinet Chief for July 2.
The decision was adopted during the Parliamentary Labor meeting, where opposition blocs proposed treating the interpellation project in the next session. Patricia Bullrich, president of the ruling La Libertad Avanza bloc, held an extensive meeting with dialogue blocs, who anticipated their decision to promote the interpellation.
Bullrich clarified that the inclusion of this project was proposed by opposition blocs and "will not be accompanied by La Libertad Avanza". She also explained the procedural requirements: "If the interpellation is voted, it can be done before or after the report, depending on what is agreed; it is an operative article of the Constitution and requires an absolute majority".
The president of the PRO bloc, Martín Goerling Lara, was blunt: the permanence of Adorni as Cabinet Chief "cannot continue". He warned that his bloc will support "a request for censure or removal" if the official does not give explanations about his patrimony.
"Adorni cannot remain in his position any longer, our party said so and former president Mauricio Macri expressed it in a statement. Adorni's continuity is breaking the bond with society and paralyzing management", Goerling Lara stated.
The interpellation project already has 25 votes secured, with additional support from:
Adorni faces questioning over a 775% increase in his patrimony in sworn declarations, rising from $20 million to $944 million. The official admitted to an omission of USD 500,000. Judge Ariel Lijo is investigating the case.
In the Chamber of Deputies, the opposition has gathered 120 signatures of the 129 needed for a censure motion. The session is scheduled for June 23, 2024.
President Javier Milei maintains his support for the official with the message: "If there is even 1% possibility, fight at 100%".
La Libertad Avanza is Argentina's current ruling party, a libertarian coalition that won the 2023 elections with economist Javier Milei as its presidential candidate. Patricia Bullrich, who ran against Milei in the first round, later became a key ally and currently serves as Minister of Security.
PRO (Propuesta Republicana) is a center-right party founded by former President Mauricio Macri. It has been a traditional ally of La Libertad Avanza in congress, but this case has strained relations.
The Cabinet Chief (Jefe de Gabinete) is Argentina's third-highest official, responsible for coordinating government ministries and reporting to Congress. An interpellation is a formal summons requiring the official to appear before Congress to answer questions.
With the Senate session postponement, the government now has approximately 15 days to decide whether to keep Adorni in office or remove him. The interpellation is set for July 2, 2024, where the Cabinet Chief must answer senators' questions about his patrimony and faces a potential censure motion.
