A Near-Death Experience in Buenos Aires

Joaquín Levinton, lead singer of the popular Argentine band Turf, recounted in a recent interview the terrifying moment a heart attack nearly ended his life in late 2025. What started as an ordinary day transformed into a life-changing event that the musician describes as a genuine "rebirth."

The incident occurred while Levinton was walking near Canal 9 (one of Argentina's major television stations) with a friend. He began feeling intense chest pain and initially assumed it was low blood pressure. Seeking help, he entered "El Timón", a classic Buenos Aires bodegón (a traditional neighborhood tavern typical of Argentine culture).

The Critical Moment

The musician recalled with raw honesty: "Just when I was about to recover my voice, boom, I had a heart attack." Inside the restaurant, a waiter named Richard became an improvised hero by assisting him immediately.

"The waiter told me 'Lie down here.' And I said 'No, what a pathetic scene,'" Joaquín confessed, admitting he felt embarrassed to be seen in that condition in the middle of the dining room.

The Rescue

Emergency services (SAME - Buenos Aires' public ambulance system) rushed the musician to Hospital Fernández, a public hospital where he received life-saving treatment. With gratitude, Levinton emphasized: "Greetings to everyone at Fernández, they're amazing, great hospital," praising Argentina's public healthcare system.

The heart attack was linked to genetically inherited cholesterol issues: "It runs in the family," the musician explained, highlighting the importance of preventive medical checkups.

The Playful Exchange with Argentina's Television Icon

On the June 21, 2026 broadcast of La Noche de Mirtha (the legendary late-night talk show), the 99-year-old host Mirtha Legrand had a hilarious exchange with Levinton that brought laughter to the table.

Mirtha, true to her signature style, was direct: "Do you have a girlfriend? Are you in a relationship?" The singer, deflecting with humor, responded: "Something like that. I don't talk about my private life. Because then people..."

The diva's reaction was instantaneous: "Stand up and leave right now!" she said in mock indignation, provoking laughter from everyone present.

Mirtha had previously commented that Levinton is "very handsome" and "very mischievous," asking if he was the most successful with women in his class, to which he replied: "No, because I was shy as a kid."

Who is Mirtha Legrand?

Mirtha Legrand is Argentina's most iconic television host, with a career spanning over 70 years. Her Sunday lunch program is a cultural institution where celebrities, politicians, and artists share intimate moments over food. At 99 years old, she remains active and influential in Argentine media.

A Renewed Life Full of Projects

That health scare marked the beginning of a new chapter for Levinton. "I came back to life and the following year... I started walking more, eating healthy, changing some habits," he shared about his personal transformation.

The musician also expressed gratitude: "For me, it's a beautiful adventure to be back, having met her and doing this program," he said while gesturing toward Mirtha.

Understanding Heart Attacks: Prevention Matters

A myocardial infarction (heart attack) occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked, typically by cholesterol buildup in arteries. Risk factors include genetics, diet, and lifestyle. Doctors recommend regular checkups, especially with family history of heart disease. Levinton's case highlights that even young, active people can be affected.
